From Indonesia to Tokyo: Taking on the Challenge of a Circular Innovation Model in Disaster Resilience and GX

In September 2025, SAKIGAKE JAPAN Corp. in collaboration with Personal Business Co., Ltd. and one other company, was selected for the Tokyo Metropolitan Government’s “Global South GX Promotion Project.”

This joint initiative aims to tackle challenges in food and agricultural logistics in Indonesia by leveraging a Japan-developed, off-grid cold storage technology. It’s a practical project that simultaneously addresses greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction and food waste, representing a new model of Green Transformation (GX) and disaster resilience.

The “Risk of Not Being Able to Cool Down” Facing Indonesia

In many agricultural and coastal regions of Indonesia, reliable cold storage infrastructure is lacking. About 70% of cold storage units depend on diesel generators, resulting in frequent power outages, soaring fuel costs, and disruptions in food safety, quality, and income. These infrastructure gaps cause a 20–40% spoilage rate in harvested crops and seafood—amounting to an annual economic loss of approximately ¥1 trillion and significant GHG emissions from wasted food.

Changing the Way We Cool with Solutions from Japan

To address this social issue, we are introducing off-grid refrigeration units.

  • No external power required (solar + battery system)
  • Stable internal temperatures within ±1°C, even in harsh climates (35–40°C)
  • IoT-enabled remote monitoring and optimization

With this system, we aim to achieve an annual CO₂ reduction of 75 tons and a 20–30% reduction in food loss.

From Indonesia to Tokyo: Envisioning Reverse Technology Transfer

This project is not limited to Indonesia—it’s also designed with Tokyo in mind. We are exploring reverse application of the solutions to strengthen Japan’s disaster preparedness:

  • Deploying emergency cold storage units at disaster hubs in Tokyo
  • Implementing off-grid cold chains for remote islands
  • Reducing food waste at central wholesale markets

Through this “technology round-trip” model, we aim to establish a circular GX framework that connects Tokyo and the Global South.

A Collaborative Path Toward the Future

This initiative follows a three-year plan:

  • Year 1: Local research and planning
  • Year 2: Pilot implementation at three sites in Indonesia
  • Year 3: Commercialization and regional expansion across ASEAN

Our goal is to scale up to 1,500 sites, ultimately cutting 37,500 tons of CO₂ per year and standardizing this sustainable cold chain infrastructure across the food sector.

In Closing: GX Begins with Real-World Action

GX—or Green Transformation—may sound abstract, but for us, it starts with listening, showing up, and working alongside communities to build tangible solutions.

  • Protecting food security
  • Reducing environmental impact
  • Strengthening resilience against disaster

We believe these are not just buzzwords, but real, practical goals that require innovation, systems, and collaboration. Through this project, we hope to embody a GX that’s grounded, hands-on, and future-focused.

Thank you for your continued interest and support for SAKIGAKE JAPAN’s mission.
