Yui Taka-Hassan, who majors in Disaster and Emergency Management at Coventry University in the UK, has joined SAKIGAKE JAPAN Corp. as an intern. While studying disaster and emergency management at university, Yui researched companies working in Japan’s disaster prevention field online, found SAKIGAKE JAPAN, and reached out to us directly.
Very few people, in Japan or abroad, pursue specialized undergraduate study in disaster and emergency management. In addition to this expertise, an international perspective rooted in both Japanese and British backgrounds, and the initiative he showed in independently seeking out and contacting our company, make Yui an extremely valuable addition to SAKIGAKE JAPAN Corp.

Self-Introduction
Hello, I’m Yui Taka-Hassan.
I am currently majoring in Disaster and Emergency Management at Coventry University in the UK. At university, I served as the Inclusivity Officer for the Japanese culture club, “Japanese Society.” I worked to introduce Japanese language and culture to British students, while also helping create an environment where people from a wide range of backgrounds could easily participate and enjoy Japanese culture.
I have roots in both Japan and the UK. I am still learning to read and write kanji, but since I regularly speak Japanese with family members living in Japan, I am able to communicate comfortably in Japanese.
I hope to draw on both the knowledge of disaster and emergency management I’m gaining at university and my experience with both Japanese and British culture, to contribute to work that connects disaster prevention efforts in Japan with those overseas.
How I Discovered SAKIGAKE JAPAN
As I studied disaster and emergency management at university, I became interested in how Japan’s disaster prevention technology and disaster-response experience are being put to use overseas. While researching companies and organizations working in Japan’s disaster prevention field online, I came across SAKIGAKE JAPAN Corp.
I was strongly drawn to the fact that SAKIGAKE JAPAN Corp. is working to expand the disaster prevention and crisis management technology and knowledge cultivated in Japan beyond its borders and out into the world, which is why I reached out myself. I also see great potential in the fact that, as a disaster-prevention startup, the company doesn’t merely introduce technology, but works to implement it in ways tailored to the specific challenges faced by each country and region.
Why I Chose to Join SAKIGAKE JAPAN
Japan has accumulated a wealth of technology and experience through its response to a range of disasters — earthquakes, tsunamis, typhoons, and heavy rains. I believe that spreading this knowledge to regions around the world will be extremely important for the future of disaster and crisis management.
SAKIGAKE JAPAN Corp.’s business overlaps closely with what I’m studying at university and with the direction I hope to pursue in the field of disaster and emergency management going forward. I feel very fortunate to be able to experience the process by which disaster prevention technology becomes socially implemented — not just by learning theory at university, but by being involved in actual business operations and communications.

Studying disaster and emergency management professionally at university while carrying both Japanese and British cultural backgrounds, Yui is an extremely valuable team member for SAKIGAKE JAPAN Corp. Going forward, we plan to have Yui put these strengths to use, including in sharing information about disaster prevention and crisis management in the UK and Europe.
Launching a New Column: “Disaster Prevention and Crisis Management, Seen from the UK”
Going forward, Yui will take charge of a new column on the SAKIGAKE JAPAN Corp. blog, introducing disaster prevention and crisis management in the UK and Europe. Drawing on his specialized perspective as a student studying disaster and emergency management in the UK, and his position spanning both Japanese and British culture, he plans to cover topics such as disaster prevention education, disaster response, and community-level disaster prevention overseas.
The disasters anticipated, the approach to disaster prevention, and the roles of government, communities, and citizens all differ depending on the country and region. While touching on similarities and differences with Japan, we aim to deliver content that helps you feel a closer connection to disaster prevention efforts overseas.
The first installment is planned to introduce what Yui is studying at Coventry University, and what first sparked his interest in the field of disaster and emergency management. Please look forward to it.
