Introduction
SAKIGAKE JAPAN Corp. held discussions with the Faculty of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (FTMD) at Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB: Institut Teknologi Bandung) in Indonesia regarding joint research utilizing PCM (phase change material) technology, and we are pleased to report that both parties have reached an agreement toward signing an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding).
These discussions took place when SAKIGAKE JAPAN Corp. CEO Munetoshi Kondo visited Bandung in June 2026 during a business trip to Indonesia, meeting with Dr. Yuli Setyo Indartono and Dr. Firman Bagja Juangsa of ITB-FTMD. A formal press release regarding this matter has also been issued by ITB.

Discussion Content: The Potential of PCM Technology in Fisheries and Renewable Energy
PCM (Phase Change Material) is a material with the property of absorbing, storing, and releasing thermal energy as a substance changes state — from solid to liquid, or from liquid to solid. This property has drawn attention as a technology capable of achieving energy-efficient and sustainable cooling systems.
In this discussion, the two parties exchanged views on applying this property to the fisheries sector, discussing the development of a PCM-based cooling system capable of maintaining temperatures as low as minus 10°C. This is expected to serve as a more efficient alternative for reducing post-harvest loss of seafood, a challenge in many regions of Indonesia.
The discussion also covered improving energy efficiency and reducing operating costs by combining photovoltaic (PV) systems with cold storage facilities. This combination is expected to be particularly effective in coastal and remote island areas where access to stable power supply is limited.
What Comes Next: Toward Comprehensive Collaboration Spanning Technical Validation, Fundraising, and Decarbonization
This discussion with ITB is not limited to a simple exchange of technical views. Going forward, the two parties plan to advance the following concrete forms of collaboration.
First, conducting the technical validation of this project at ITB. Performance evaluation and demonstration experiments for PCM technology will be advanced using ITB’s research environment and specialized expertise.
Second, advancing the project through joint fundraising by both SAKIGAKE JAPAN Corp. and ITB. Rather than relying on the resources of one party alone, both organizations will work to secure funding from their respective positions, increasing the feasibility of the project.
Third, advancing comprehensive joint research that extends into the context of decarbonization, toward the implementation of this project. The collaboration will develop beyond simply improving the efficiency of cooling technology in the fisheries sector, into broader joint research encompassing the use of renewable energy and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.
As stated in ITB’s own article, this collaboration aims to ensure that “the synergy between the university and international industry not only strengthens the fisheries and renewable energy sectors, but also contributes to sustainable economic and environmental development in Indonesia.”
