Participation in disaster headquarters training provided by the Lab of the University of Tokyo.

We recently engaged in the Disaster Response Headquarters Training orchestrated by the Numata Laboratory at the Institute of Industrial Science, University of Tokyo. The Numata Laboratory’s pivotal role in on-site operations, from Yokohama City in Kanagawa Prefecture to Kobe City in Hyogo Prefecture, and most recently in Suzu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, post the Noto earthquake, greatly informed the depth of this training.

In the face of a large-scale disaster, the establishment of an emergency command post, efficient command chain control, and accurate information organization are paramount to minimizing loss of life. Despite being labeled as an “introduction,” the exercises delved into actual disaster scenarios, offering substantial content. Furthermore, the opportunity to share the latest information on disaster-stricken areas and exchange perspectives with crisis management and disaster prevention officials nationwide proved invaluable.

The palpable tension during the simulation underscored the significance of adeptly organizing information flow and making swift, informed decisions, directly impacting the potential to save lives. Active participation in such drills serves to further enrich our comprehension of disaster prevention. It’s imperative to approach these training sessions earnestly, maintaining a commitment to continuous learning, as this is essential for constructing a society resilient to disasters.
